AI Skills Bootcamp Funding: The 2026 UK Employer Guide

AI Skills Bootcamps are one of the most heavily subsidised workforce programmes ever offered to UK employers. Used well, they let a 200-person SME train a whole department in AI for the cost of a single laptop refresh. This guide explains exactly how the funding works in 2026.

AI Skills Bootcamp Funding: The 2026 UK Employer Guide

How the co-funding model works

The Department for Education funds 60–70% of bootcamp delivery for large employers, and up to 90% for SMEs under 250 staff. The employer pays the balance, typically £500–£1,500 per learner depending on cohort size.

Funding flows through approved Skills Bootcamp providers — employers do not apply to DfE directly. Cotalent AI partners with approved providers to package cohorts for member employers.

Who is eligible

Any UK-based employer with PAYE-registered staff is eligible. Learners must be aged 19+, have the right to work in the UK and not be undertaking another publicly funded course at the same time.

Combining bootcamps with the Apprenticeship Levy

Forward-thinking employers stack the two. Use AI Skills Bootcamp funding for breadth across hundreds of staff, then channel the top 5% into the Level 4 AI Automation Practitioner Apprenticeship paid from the levy. The blended cost-per-skill is the lowest available in the UK market.
